About This Call
Art Encounters is a year-long outdoor sculpture exhibit that showcases sculptures in various media and styles displayed in highly visible areas in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Parker. The project is designed to promote public interest in art, develop community pride and draw visitors to the retail or civic areas where sculptures are displayed.
Selected artists will receive a $500 stipend, payable after completion of the installation process. Art is placed in high traffic areas for maximum exposure, and artists have the chance for their artwork to be purchased. Artists who submit more than one piece could possibly have more than one piece selected, potentially resulting in pieces displayed in different jurisdictions for greater publicity. The program will be marketed in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree and Parker. Douglas County Art Encounters has resulted in 6 sculpture purchases over 5 years of the program.
A Public Art Advisory Committee with representatives from throughout Douglas County selects artwork from applications submitted for this program. The Committee functions under the direction of the Douglas County Cultural Council and determines which art goes in each jurisdiction. The displayed work is identified with the artist name, title of piece, year and the Art Encounters logo. Applicants should submit 1-3 images. Following selection in mid-late February, artists will receive emails indicating if their work has been selected. Selected artists will be provided with a contract; failure to sign and return the contract by the specified date may result in dismissal from the exhibition. Installation is scheduled for May/June 2013 in coordination with each jurisdiction and the artist.
