About This Call
Art Encounters is a year-long outdoor sculpture exhibit showcasing sculptures in various media and styles displayed in highly visible areas in Castle Rock, Highlands Ranch, Lone Tree, and Parker, Colorado. The project is designed to promote public interest in art, develop community pride, and draw visitors to retail and civic areas.
A Public Art Advisory Committee with representatives from throughout Douglas County selects artwork from applications submitted for the program. The Committee functions under the direction of the Douglas County Cultural Council and determines which art goes in each jurisdiction. Selected artists receive a $500 stipend payable after installation completion. Art is placed in high traffic areas for maximum exposure, and artists have the opportunity for their artwork to be purchased.
The program is open to artists and artist teams over 18 years of age. Each artist may submit up to three entries of existing, completed work. All work must be original in concept and able to sustain extreme elements and weather fluctuations common in Colorado with minimal or no maintenance. Artists are responsible for delivery of their work and delivery costs, and must coordinate with the jurisdiction for installation. All work must be for sale and remain on display throughout the exhibition period. Artists must submit two high-resolution images (jpeg, 300 dpi or higher) from different perspectives per entry, with the base visible. The Public Art Advisory Committee retains the right to reject works differing markedly from submitted images and reserves the right to reproduce and distribute images for promotion. If selected, the artwork submitted must be the same as delivered in size, color, edition, and other specifications. The jurisdiction will cover insurance and installation costs at the location site. At the end of the program, each jurisdiction has first right to purchase a sculpture for permanent display.
