About This Call
Double Take is an international juried exhibition inviting submissions that engage with questions such as: Can we trust what we think we see at first glance? What can we discover when we take a second look? How reliable are our first impressions? Submitted works might touch any of the theme's concepts, including unconventional use of media, distortions, optical illusion, detailed drawings, double exposure, mirrors, replications, twining, and/or camouflage. Submissions are invited that disrupt viewers' assumptions. The exhibition welcomes a diverse array of media, including digital media, film, graphic art, painting, illustration, photography, printmaking, sculpture, textiles, video and installation art.
The exhibition will be held January 21 through February 24, 2022, at The Art Effect's Trolley Barn Gallery, 489 Main St., Poughkeepsie, New York, with an Opening Reception and Prize Announcement on January 21, 2022, 5-7pm. The juror is Rachel Seligman, Assistant Director for Curatorial Affairs and Malloy Curator at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College, working in collaboration with youth from The Art Effect. Prizes include $500 First Prize, $250 Second Prize, and $150 Honorable Mention. Artists will be notified within approximately 2-3 weeks after the deadline about the selection status of their entries.
Entry fee is $35 for the first three images plus $5 for each additional image (15 images maximum, including up to 3 video submissions). Reduced rates are available for Art Effect & Barrett Art Center Members ($30), City of Poughkeepsie Residents with zip code 12601 ($30), and current Art Effect students ($20). Artwork specifications: maximum 7' in any direction with no minimum; 2D artwork should not weigh in excess of 65 pounds. Artwork must be exhibition ready with appropriate frames and hardware. Artists are responsible for transportation to and from the gallery and must provide return shipping labels. Exhibiting artists may specify a retail price for work available for purchase; The Art Effect retains a 20% commission for members and students, 30% for non-members. Artists of all ages are welcome, regardless of location or identity.
