About This Call

Dixie State University seeks letters of interest and qualifications from artists interested in creating site-specific art for the public areas of the new Dixie State University Human Performance Center in St. George, Utah. The approximately 155,000 square-foot facility combines academics, recreation, and athletics, serving as a gateway for the west entry of campus. It includes classrooms, teaching labs, an Olympic-size competition pool with spectator seating, full-service fitness center with multipurpose rooms, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, indoor and outdoor running track, 65-foot climbing wall, 12-foot bouldering wall, nutrition bar and lounge, and an exterior plaza with gas-fueled fire pit.

The Art Selection Committee has identified potential sites for art placement including the exterior northeast quad entry (main campus entrance), exterior space between the Human Performance Center and Student Activity Center, interior lobby between northeast and west entries, exterior west entry, second-level two-story interior lounge space overlooking the northeast entry plaza, and perforated metal panels on the west exterior. Artists may suggest additional sites.

A budget of $204,000 has been allocated by the Utah State Legislature to commission public art work(s), covering all costs including travel, installation, and related expenses. Finalists will receive an honorarium to assist with costs for proposal presentation and interview with the selection committee, which becomes part of the total commission award. Resident American or legal resident artists and artist teams are eligible. Utah artists are encouraged to apply. Submissions must include a letter of interest (maximum three typewritten pages), up to six images of previous site-specific public work in JPEG format (1920 pixels maximum on longest side, 72 dpi, under 2MB file size), and a PDF document identifying each image with title, year, medium, and dimensions. Applications may be submitted online at www.callforentry.org or via USB flash drive. The deadline is August 3, 2018 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
