About This Call
The Regional Arts & Culture Council in Portland, Oregon invites artists and teams currently residing in Oregon and Washington to submit qualifications for a public art opportunity for the Division Streetscape in Southeast Portland. The budget for the project is $72,000. The deadline for submissions is 9:59 PM PDT, Sunday, May 16, 2010.
Division Street is a major transportation corridor in east Portland extending from SE 7th to Gresham (about 10 miles east). The Streetscape and Street Reconstruction Project, beginning in mid-2011, will repave Division Street from SE 6th to 39th Avenue and include streetscape improvements from SE 11th to 39th Avenue such as street trees, bioswales, curb extensions, new crosswalks, streetlights, improved signalization, and public art. The Selection Panel seeks an artist with the ability to interpret and convey the character of the community while maintaining their own artistic voice. The resulting work would be pedestrian-scale and episodic in nature, occurring multiple times in various ways along Division Street between SE 12th and SE 39th.
Eligibility: Artists living in Oregon or Washington are eligible to apply. Students enrolled in degree programs are not eligible. Applicants must submit exactly 10 images of past work, a statement of interest (2000 characters maximum), a résumé (maximum 2 pages), three professional references, and an image list as a PDF. The selected artist will be contracted for a design phase during which they will meet with the community, work with the design team, and identify sites for the artwork. The budget of $72,000 covers design, fabrication, insurance, engineering, permits and installation costs. An additional $5,000 is available for the selected artist to work with an emerging neighborhood artist as a studio assistant and liaison. The artwork must comply with public safety and ADA guidelines, be made of durable materials, and be easily maintained. The selected artist will be required to consult with an art conservator regarding final design, fabrication and installation plans.
