About This Call

The Glendale Arts and Culture Commission is seeking artists with experience in public art design and production to submit proposals for temporary public art to be displayed at the Día de los Muertos Celebration on Saturday, November 2, 2019 in Glendale, CA. The celebration takes place on the Artsakh Paseo (between Broadway St. and Wilson Ave.) in Downtown Glendale and is a free, all-ages event featuring free workshops, live performances, a community altar (ofrenda), and activities for kids.

The temporary artwork should celebrate and honor loved ones who have passed, acknowledge the purpose of Día de los Muertos, and be accessible and suitable for all ages. Artwork in all mediums will be considered, including pre-existing work if appropriate. The artwork must accommodate outdoor and potentially indoor display for a minimum of one week and should consider engagement during daylight and nighttime hours. On-the-ground artwork is acceptable, though there may be opportunity to place artwork above the crowd via wires or atop city-owned structures.

The Arts and Culture Commission will provide a $5,000 stipend inclusive of all artist fees, materials, assembly, transportation, installation, breakdown, and relocation. The project is open to local and regional artists, both new and established, applying individually or as a group. Artists retain all rights to their work, which must be original. Ineligible entries include work containing copyrighted images, brand names, plagiarized content, or material that defames others, incites lawless acts, or violates California Penal Code regarding obscene or harmful matter for minors. Selected artists must comply with the City's insurance and liability requirements and sign a Release of Liability and Indemnity Agreement. Application deadline: Friday, September 13, 2019 at 10:00 PM. Notification of selection: Wednesday, September 25, 2019. Contact: Jennifer Fukutomi-Jones at [email protected].
