About This Call
Devotion: Sewing the Sacred is the 2020 SDA International Exhibition in Print. Each year, this exhibition showcases contemporary artists and designers working with or inspired by fiber art and textile-based materials, methods, and techniques. Selected work will be featured in the Fall 2020 issue of Surface Design Journal, which is read by artists, gallery owners, curators, scholars, and enthusiasts nationally and internationally.
The exhibition explores the theme of devotion in material form, examining how repetitive and devotional processes of textile production reveal meaningful narratives in daily life and handwork. The exhibition invites artists from many material traditions to explore this theme. Artists working in all media are encouraged to apply. Work must have been completed since January 1, 2018. Artists may enter up to three artworks. 2D and 3D works are eligible, as is documentation of time-based media, performance, or conceptual work. Only photographic documentation will be considered.
Entry fees are $25 for SDA members and $45 for non-members, with each entry including up to 3 artworks. Submissions require 2 images per artwork (1 overall and 1 detail), maximum 6 images total per entrant. Images must be JPEG format, 1200 pixels or larger on longest side, 72 ppi/dpi resolution, and 5 MB maximum file size. A brief artist statement of 100-150 words maximum is required. Selected artists will receive one complimentary print copy of Surface Design Journal. Award categories include Surface Design, Guest Juror, Material Exploration, Next Generation, Innovation in Technique, Innovative Installation, and Modern meets traditional. Jurors are Jovencio de la Paz and Lauren Sinner. Artist notification of acceptance is July 6, 2020, with publication of the journal on September 20, 2020.
