About This Call
Derivative Composition is an international juried art exhibition by VSA arts seeking visual artists with disabilities whose work is inspired by the performing arts. The exhibition theme invites artists to consider work that draws inspiration from music, theater, or dance, exploring aesthetics such as storytelling, grace, balance, timing, strength, rhythm, humor, costume, irony, beauty, drama, and suspense.
Eligible applicants are artists ages 18 and over with a physical, cognitive, or mental disability who are committed to their artistic progress. Work entered must be completed after the onset of disability. Applicants from a wide range of artistic practices are encouraged to apply, including digital arts, installation, and time-based media. There is no entry fee. Submissions must be original work completed in the last five years and after the onset of disability. Eligible media include two- and three-dimensional art, digital art, installation, and time-based media. Fragile or precious materials that cannot withstand handling, storage, and transportation will not be accepted.
Applicants must submit four digital JPEG images representing their work through the CaFE system at www.callforentry.org, along with an artist's narrative (no more than 2,500 characters), a current resume, a personal statement responding to the exhibition theme (no more than 350 characters), and a headshot photograph in JPEG format. The artist's narrative should describe how the work relates to the theme, describe the work as evidenced in the JPEGs, and explain the role of art in living with disability and how disability has shaped the artistic process. Supplemental materials such as video, film, or audio should be mailed on CD or DVD. Selected work will be presented at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., from May 29 to July 20, 2008. Artists will be notified by Friday, April 11, 2008. VSA arts is responsible for shipping costs and insurance. For assistance, contact Jennifer Wexler at (202) 628-2800, ext. 3885 or [email protected].
