About This Call

Denver Union Station Project Authority (DUSPA) is seeking an artist or artist team for a site-specific public art commission for Denver Union Station, a multimodal transportation hub integrating light rail, commuter rail, intercity rail (Amtrak), and bus service. The project is the largest transit redevelopment project in North America and will serve as a gateway for approximately 100,000–160,000 daily travelers, operating 24 hours a day.

Potential artwork locations include the main plaza between the historic station and transit platforms, the approach from underground bus terminals to the main plaza and Wewatta plaza, the interior of the 22-bay subterranean bus terminal (spanning roughly 1,000 feet), and Wewatta Street Plaza. The selection panel is open to artwork in all media and materials, including kinetic or light-based media. The artwork must have a presence during both day and night. All work must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for Colorado's weather and exposure to physical stresses and vandalism. The estimated budget is $500,000 USD, inclusive of all costs including design fees, consultation fees, structural engineering, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, travel, and contingency expenses.

Applicants must submit eight digital images, a résumé, and a statement of interest (no longer than 2,000 characters) via www.callforentry.org. There is no application fee. From these applications, the selection panel may choose three to five semi-finalists for interviews. If a formal proposal is requested, the artist will receive an honorarium to prepare and present the proposal in person. Semi-finalists are encouraged to conduct a site visit and will be expected to pay travel expenses from the honorarium. This project is open to artists of all experience levels, including emerging artists. Single artists and multi-person collaborations are eligible to apply. The entry deadline is June 1, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
