About This Call

Denver International Airport (DEN) seeks to commission a Colorado-based artist or artist team to create a dynamic, site-specific work of suspended public artwork for the Concourse B-East expansion site. This Request for Qualification (RFQ) is part of the larger Concourse Expansion Program, with four locations identified across all three concourses for public artwork inclusion. A separate RFQ will be released for the three other project sites. The selection panel includes community representatives, arts and culture professionals, and civic leaders, with a budget range of $300,000.00 - $450,000.00.

DEN is seeking a piece of suspended artwork within the threshold between the existing concourse and the expansion area. The artwork should act as a landmark for passengers and offer a sense of arrival, with a maximum footprint of 42ft (L), 22ft (W), 11ft (D) or total available artwork volume of 10,164 ft³. Concourse B is DEN's busiest concourse, serving United Airlines and 28 million passengers in 2019, with 55% connecting to another flight and 45% originating or ending their travels at DEN.

Project goals include activating the Concourse B-East expansion area with dynamic site-specific suspended artwork; reflecting the individual personality of Concourse B and its travelers; speaking to the international audience while highlighting the culture of Denver and Colorado; serving as a landmark or meeting point; aiding in pulling passengers down the concourse toward the expansion and their flights; providing a sense of wonderment and relief; and complementing DEN's iconic architecture. Artists should consider daytime and nighttime presence utilizing Colorado's natural lighting, with over 300 sunny days a year and four distinct seasons. Work sample requirements: 4-6 images, 0-1 audio file, 0-1 video file, for a total of 4-8 samples.
