About This Call

"Mid-Century Modern" presents visual interpretations of the Denver Botanic Gardens' historic Conservatory and Education buildings. This exhibition solicits two-dimensional artworks (photos, paintings, drawings, or other media) that capture the essence of these landmark structures, including the Boettcher Memorial Conservatory and the related Education Building. Works may be rendered from both outside and inside vantage points. Other objects may be included in compositions, and literal interpretations are not necessary, but the structures must be recognizable in part. A selection of historical documentation and vintage photos will complement the art installation. The exhibit will be mounted in Gates Garden Court, an indoor courtyard/gallery.

As a result of this call, a select number of artists will be invited to create new work for the exhibit. The resulting work is not to be considered commissioned but can be made available for sale. Artists must submit five images of previously completed artwork, a brief artist statement (not exceeding 250 words or 1000 characters), and a current résumé (no more than two pages). The entry fee is $25. Only artists maintaining a residence in Colorado are eligible to apply. Artists must be willing to deliver or ship artwork to and pick up from Denver Botanic Gardens. All artwork must arrive ready to hang with label information and sale price (if applicable) marked clearly on the back. Two-dimensional work must be prepared with a wire on the back to facilitate hanging from a hook/wire system.

Once accepted into the exhibition, artists may make artworks available for sale. Any artworks sold are subject to a 30% commission and must remain on display for the duration of the exhibition. Artists bear the responsibility of negotiating with their gallery representation if applicable. If work is to be represented in the exhibition, the artist agrees to allow Denver Botanic Gardens to use the image for promotion and grants permission for cropping the image if necessary in promotional applications. Event dates: 11/21/09 - 1/17/10.
