About This Call
Denver Botanic Gardens invites artists to submit work for the juried exhibition "Extinction: Artists Respond." The show complements programs addressing evolution and extinction accompanying the major outdoor exhibit "Jurassic Gardens: Evolution and Extinction."
The "Extinction" exhibit will display contemporary artist responses to concepts, problems, and issues raised by the potential or actual demise of species. While the extinction of dinosaurs provides a backdrop, contemporary conversations about climate change and habitat destruction also highlight extinction happening in our lifetimes. Literal or representational interpretations are not required. The exhibition will be mounted in two areas: an indoor courtyard/gallery area and an outdoor courtyard containing a sensory garden. Two-dimensional artworks and small three-dimensional works not suitable for outside display will be selected for indoor installation. A very limited number of larger three-dimensional works will be selected for the sensory garden outdoors. Smaller 3-D works will be mounted indoors in a glass display case and will not be accessible for touching. Juried by Simon Zalkind of Singer Gallery, Mizel Arts & Culture Center, and Ivar Zeile of Plus Gallery, both of Denver.
Eligibility is limited to artists residing in Colorado. Artists must submit one to six digital images of actual artwork (not samples) for consideration. A brief artist statement (maximum 250 words) and current résumé (maximum two pages) are required. Entry fee is $15 for the first artwork/image, with a $10 additional image fee for each additional image. Two-dimensional work must arrive ready to hang with wire on the back. Larger three-dimensional work must withstand outdoor elements and be safe for public contact, with a maximum footprint of 4' wide by 4' deep by 6' high. Smaller 3-D works cannot exceed approximately 11" depth. Once accepted, artists may make work available for sale, subject to a 30% commission. Four honors will be awarded: Juror's Choice (2), CEO's Choice, and Director's Choice. No cash prizes will be awarded, but select tickets to the Gardens' concert series will be provided. Honored artists will be listed in the Gardens' newsletter, which circulates to approximately 19,000 member households. Exhibition dates: May 23 - July 26, 2010.
