About This Call
The Denali Artist-In-Residence program, created in 2001 by the National Park Service and artist Kesler Woodward, offers professional visual artists the opportunity to pursue their work in Denali National Park. The program accepts three or four artists per summer for 10-day stays in the East Fork Cabin (also known as the Murie Cabin), available from June through August. No stipend is provided.
The East Fork Cabin is located 43 miles into the park on the East Fork of the Toklat River between Sable Pass and Polychrome Pass. The 14' x 16' cabin is rustic but well-equipped with a propane heater, range, oven, refrigerator, bunk beds, cooking equipment, and an outhouse. There is no electricity or running water, though water jugs may be replenished at Park Ranger stations and showers are available at the Toklat Ranger Station 12 miles away. Artists chosen must be comfortable in a wilderness setting.
For 2010, the program is open only to visual artists; applications from photographers will not be accepted. A panel of artists and National Park Service personnel reviews applications annually based on entry materials, vision, innovative responses to the park, and recognized accomplishment. Notification of selections will be made by November 30, 2009. Kesler Woodward, the program's first artist-in-residence, serves as program advisor and selection committee member.
