About This Call
San Jose Public Art (SJPA), in conjunction with the City's Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services (PRNS), is seeking an experienced artist or artist-led team to create a public art project for the new Del Monte Park. This opportunity is open to individual artists or artist-led teams working or residing in the San Francisco Bay Area counties: Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Mateo, San Francisco, Alameda, Contra Costa, Solano, Yolo, and Marin. If submitting as a team, a professional artist with public art experience must be the lead team member. All applicants must have all necessary documentation and permits to work in the United States at the time of submittal.
The new park is located on approximately 1.7 acres of land formerly occupied by the Del Monte Cannery, bounded by Auzerais Avenue to the north, West Home Street to the south, a portion of the Los Gatos Creek Trail to the east, and Southern Pacific rail lines to the west. The park will include an off-leash dog park, restroom, play area, open space/turf play area, shade structure/trellis, benches, and picnic tables. The successful public art project should be made of durable materials suited to an outdoor urban park location and enhance the experience of park visitors. The Los Gatos Creek Trail forms one border for the park, presenting an opportunity to create a visual identity for this location while providing continuity with the overall trail system.
This is a design-build project with a total budget of $100,000, divided between design development (approximately $15,000) and fabrication/installation ($85,000, which must include a 10% contingency). The selected artist or team is expected to design, fabricate, and install the artwork. The design phase includes background research, design proposal development through four steps (concept proposal, schematic design proposal, design development, and construction documentation), staff review, community feedback, and approvals from the San Jose Public Art Committee and Department of Public Works. The project schedule includes artist selection and contracting (January–February 2014), research and concept development (February–March 2014), concept proposal presentation (March 2014), design development presentation (April 2014), fabrication (April–December 2014), and installation (November–December 2014). The contract will be effective through December 2014. Artists currently under contract with the City of San Jose Public Art Program are not eligible unless their current project will be complete by January 2014 or is suspended. Submit work samples (4-8 images) online through CaFE. Selection will be based on aesthetic excellence of past projects, experience with community engagement, experience developing artworks in outdoor environments, experience with appropriate construction materials and methods, and delivery of projects within budget range.
