Déjà Vu: Double Exposure

Déjà Vu: Double Exposure is a photography exhibition exploring the concept of double exposure and its evocative, layered meanings. Much like déjà vu itself—an illusion of memory—double exposure can hold many interpretations: two negatives stacked in a darkroom, a single 35mm frame exposed twice, or the juxtaposition of contrasting ideas captured within a single image. Artists are challenged to delve into their vision and uncover the double exposures that move them, make them think, or stir their emotions. Double exposure photography has a long history, emerging in the mid-19th century when photographers experimented with multiple exposures on a single plate or film. The technique gained popularity in the Victorian era, particularly in spirit photography, and was embraced by surrealist artists like Man Ray and László Moholy-Nagy. Digital photography has made the technique more accessible, fostering new waves of creative experimentation.

This call accepts images that are digitally manipulated to create a double exposure; however, AI-generated photos are not permitted. Submissions are open to all photographers internationally; NOPA membership is not required. Artists may submit 1-5 images in JPEG or JPG format, under 5MB with a minimum of 1200 pixels on the longest side. Entry fees are $25 for members and $35 for non-members. The exhibition opens March 27, 2025 and runs through May 14, 2025. Selected artists will be notified February 25, 2025. All work must be delivered framed and ready to hang by March 16, 2025. The gallery receives 40 percent and the artist receives 60 percent of the retail price of works sold. Artists are responsible for all shipping fees.
