About This Call
The Decatur Arts Alliance invites submissions for public art sculptures at Sam's Crossing, a retail/residential development in Decatur, Georgia. The project site is located at the eastern boundary of the City of Decatur, one block from the Avondale MARTA station, bounded by East Ponce de Leon Ave. to the south and Arcadia Ave. to the north. The Stone Mountain multi-use trail is located directly across the development along East Ponce de Leon Ave.
The call seeks art that generates a sense of place and gathering, celebrates the diversity of the surrounding community, encourages viewer interaction and engagement, and explores sustainability through natural and renewable materials. Work must be located in spaces accessible to the public during regular working hours and must not encroach on or impede access to streets, sidewalks, or walkways. Three sites are available with different specifications: Site A allows work up to 8 ft in diameter and 30 ft in height; Site B allows up to 5 ft in diameter and 40 ft in height; Site C allows no more than 3 ft in diameter and up to 10 ft in height. Compensation for acquired work includes delivery and transportation to Decatur, with the City of Decatur coordinating site preparation, installation, maintenance, and insurance. Site A budgets up to $40,000, Site B up to $50,000, and Site C up to $30,000.
Submissions are limited to small to large sculptures composed of artistic stonework, metal, and environmental art appropriate for exterior installation and four-season weather conditions of North Georgia. Artists may submit completed work or work in progress, including maquettes and renderings. Submissions must include a written narrative describing material components, dimensions, and installation method, along with high-quality digital images and a digital rendering of the work in the proposed site. A one to two-page resume/CV with contact information and three professional references is required. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States and familiar with Decatur, Georgia and the metro Atlanta area. Work must be installed by June 30, 2023.
