About This Call
The Town of Davie is commissioning six Broward County artists for a work-for-hire project to design and paint fiberglass Quarter Horse sculptures. Each artist will receive a prefabricated life-size horse sculpture to paint at their own workspace within Broward County. Artists will have thirty days to complete the painting, and each selected artist will be paid $2,000 upon approval, completion, and pickup of their painted horse. Artists may submit up to three designs for consideration, but only one design will be selected per artist.
The theme is "Historical Cultures of Davie," which may include farming and fruit groves, education, cowboys and rodeo, flora and fauna. Bright colors are preferred. No logos or words are permitted. Only acrylic paint, artificial resin paint, or two-component paint may be used. The artist must apply a minimum of three coats of paint using a two-part, hard gloss, clean, non-yellowing UV coating and apply a sealant to the horse. The Town has selected five horse molds in various breeds and stances, ranging from 50 inches to 6'3" in height. The completed sculptures will be placed throughout the Town at various parks and town-owned facilities.
Eligibility is open to all Broward County artists, professional to amateur, who currently reside and have a workspace in Broward County. Artists are not eligible if they are immediate family or business partners of Public Art Advisory Committee members or program staff. Submissions must include an artist statement, examples of previous artwork (minimum 3, maximum 5), and completed design proposals on provided outlines. Designs will be evaluated based on design quality, artist statement, examples of previous artwork, and medium to be used. Designs that are religious, political, or sexual in nature will not be accepted, nor will designs containing text, words, corporate logos, or advertising. The Town of Davie Public Art Advisory Committee will recommend proposed artwork for Town Council approval.
