About This Call
The Town of Davidson seeks to commission an artist or small team to create a Veterans' Monument sculpture and surrounding landscaping. Works must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe, easily maintained, and has proven viability in public artworks. All artwork must be original, and all forms of media appropriate and complementary to the space will be considered.
The monument will be located at Davidson Town Hall in the center of town on Main Street. The site is a grass island approximately 40' x 120' in a horseshoe parking lot in front of the building. The island currently houses the Town's flagpole and a memorial plaque for a police officer killed in the line of duty. Davidson's annual Veterans' Day celebration takes place on the steps of Town Hall with participants seated in the parking lot. A budget up to $100,000 is available for one or more artworks and landscaping, contingent on fundraising efforts. The total contract amount includes all applicable expenses including design fees, execution, insurance, contingency, transportation, site preparation, landscaping, and installation. Projects proposed to exceed the budget will not be considered.
This is an open competition for professional artists from the southeast and east coast with experience producing and installing successful public art pieces. The Davidson Public Art Commission will evaluate responses based on artists' past experience, examples of similar completed works, project statements, and references. Semi-finalists will be interviewed via Skype and a limited number invited for site visits to develop proposals. If multiple semi-finalists are selected, they may be required to develop preliminary proposals with a stipend provided. One artist will ultimately be selected to develop the design, fabricate, and install the artwork. The artist must carry general liability insurance. Submissions must include a current resume, statement of interest in the project, three references from clients on similar projects, and 3-8 artwork images with medium, dimensions, location, and cost information. Submissions without cost information will be rejected.
