About This Call

The Town of Jackson announces a request for artists to customize paver sections of a sidewalk design for the South Cache Street project. The selected artist will fabricate artist-made pavers designed to integrate into the overall paving pattern and replicate the theme and key imagery into two, one-color street paintings designed to highlight new crosswalks along the corridor. The street painting can be one stencil repeated in both locations. The artist will work closely with the Public Works department to ensure custom pavers integrate seamlessly into the allotted space. Specifications and paver patterns are available at http://www.jhpublicart.org/opportunities-2/.

South Cache Street is a major artery connecting the community to cultural and recreational institutions, passing visitor centers, the Historical Museum, the Town Square and the Center for the Arts before ending at the base of Snow King Mountain. The street consists of six blocks including small businesses, lodging, residences and the Center for the Arts. Project goals include integrating unified creative elements into the length of the street, creating experiential artwork that evokes discovery, encouraging pedestrian use, increasing pedestrian safety at crosswalks, highlighting the Center for the Arts as a cultural destination, and reflecting community values of creativity and access to art.

Custom pavers must be fabricated from highly durable, permanent material appropriate for high traffic areas, such as clay, stone or concrete with possible embedded glass or metal. Pavers must meet ADA requirements and require very little maintenance without hindering snow removal. Custom pavers should be 24" square or 1' x 4' and designed to fit with factory-made pavers. Approximately 15-25 pavers are envisioned depending on materials and cost. Pavers will be installed on the east side of the street only, with placement most concentrated by the Center for the Arts and tapering off at either end.

Artists must demonstrate prior experience and success working on projects of similar budget, scale and timeline, and high-level experience with selected materials. Artists living within the United States are invited to apply; local or regional artists may be given preference. The total project budget is $18,000: $15,000 for design and fabrication of pavers and $3,000 for designing, cutting stencils and street painting. One to three finalists will be identified to receive a $400 honorarium to develop conceptual designs. The Selection Panel will review site-specific concepts and recommend one for approval by the Mayor and Town Council before the artist enters into a commission agreement with the Town of Jackson.
