About This Call

CUMULUS: The Art of Meteorology is an international juried art exhibition at Coconino Center for the Arts in Flagstaff, Arizona. The exhibition explores the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere through art, coinciding with the Southwest U.S. summer monsoon season to celebrate regional weather patterns while including national and global meteorological perspectives on weather in a rapidly changing climate.

The exhibition is co-curated by meteorologist Lee Born and features three artist jurors: Shonto Begay (Flagstaff, AZ), Christine Cassano (Santa Fe, NM), and Jaewook Lee (Flagstaff, AZ). $2,500 in jurors' awards will be announced at the opening reception. Artists may submit work in any medium, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, video, digital media, and performance. Proposals for sculptural installations are welcome. The application fee is $35 ($25 for CCA members) and covers one application of up to three works of art. Entry deadline is March 1, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Artist notification is March 29, with exhibition dates from June 29 to September 28, 2024.

Submit up to three pieces with up to three images per work (one full image required, two detail images optional). High-quality digital images must be 1200 pixels longest dimension, 72 dpi, JPEG format. Video examples should be .mov or .mp4 format under 10 minutes. Include title, date, medium, dimensions, and sale price or insurance value in submission notes. A project description of 500 words or less is encouraged. Artwork must be ready for display with specific instructions for any non-standard display methods. 2D drawings and photographs must be framed. The artist is responsible for all delivery and return shipping costs, including insurance. All work must include a prepaid return shipping label and be sent in reusable cartons or crates. Flagstaff Arts Council will retain a 30% commission on all artwork sales after processing fees. Open to all artists 18 and older working with themes of meteorology.
