About This Call

The Cubberley Artist Studio Program (CASP) in Palo Alto, CA seeks artists and makers from all disciplines residing in the Greater San Francisco Bay Area for a city-sponsored, affordable studio workspace. The program supports the vitality of the arts in Palo Alto by providing affordable studio space, building creative community, and fostering public engagement with the arts. All creative types, from poets to filmmakers, sculptors to installation artists, painters to social practice artists, are invited to apply.

Successful applicants are awarded a studio space for one four-year term and may reapply for a second term. Artists may apply as individuals or in teams of two or more. Twenty-three single, shared, or lab studios are available, ranging from 360 to 1,100 square feet. Utilities (gas, electricity, wi-fi access, water, sewer, and refuse collection) are provided by the City. Rent is subsidized at $0.82/square foot for Palo Alto residents and $0.91/square foot for non-residents. Artists must obtain and maintain proof of liability insurance and meet the City's insurance requirements. Selected artists are expected to participate in a community of supportive artists, regularly use their studio space, complete four hours of service per month supporting CASP, donate one artwork to the City's Public Art Program during their first term, and participate in Open Studio events and annual reviews.

Eligibility: Artists at any career stage residing in the greater Bay Area (Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Solano, and Sonoma counties) are eligible, with preference for Palo Alto residents. High school and undergraduate students are not eligible; graduate students are eligible if their universities do not provide studio space. Applications must be submitted by July 1, 2014, 11:59 PM Mountain Time via CaFÉ online application system. Applicants will be notified of selection results by September 5, 2014, with move-in between October 1 and November 1, 2014. Required materials include current resume/CV, completed application form, and up to 6 representative images of work (or video documentation for performance/time-based media).
