About This Call

The CT AIDS Memorial is a public art project honoring those who have died of AIDS and those who continue to live with and work to eliminate HIV. Named after Shawn Lang, a longtime Connecticut advocate, the Memorial will serve as a reminder of her commitment to justice and social change. The project seeks an experienced sculpture or public art artist or artist-led team to design and install an "evergreen" three-dimensional art installation that may include seating features and interactive elements.

The Memorial will be created and installed on The Columbus Green in Hartford, Connecticut, a gateway location within walking distance of the Connecticut Legislative Office Building and the Capitol. The site is viewable by foot, car, and public transportation, can be lighted at night, and may serve as a gathering point for rallies and advocacy. The installation should be engaging, intentional, empowering, and hopeful, creating meaningful experiences for viewers and encouraging dialogue about justice and equity.

The project budget is $260,000 and must cover all design fees, materials, transportation, installation, storage, insurance, and associated costs. Applicants must submit contact information, resumes, three professional references, a one-page letter describing their interest and design approach, and up to 8 digital images of recent work including 3 previously installed installations. A one-page list of applicable previous work samples is also required. Selected respondents will be invited to submit design concepts and fee proposals. The selection process prioritizes experienced public art artists with preference given to Connecticut residents, demonstrated ability to execute projects of this scale and budget, understanding of Shawn Lang's activism, and articulated passion for the project as both an artistic and consciousness-raising endeavor.
