About This Call
CROSS CREEK RISING: THE CONSCIOUSNESS OF LAND & WATER will exhibit work that celebrates the profound influence of the environs of north Florida and Cross Creek on the lives of artists and the work they make. This exhibition is a tribute to the artistic voice and work of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, who in 1928 purchased an orange grove and house at Cross Creek in North-Central Florida. The impact of the natural surroundings on Rawlings was seminal to her life and work, leading to her winning the 1939 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for The Yearling.
Visual fine arts in all media are eligible, including 2D, 3D, drawing, painting, multi-media, sculpture, and photography. Work does not need to be made at the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings home or in the hamlet of Cross Creek, but should take as its inspiration the environs of north central Florida. Both non-representational and representational work are welcome. This call is global—artists may be residents of north Florida or live outside the region. Work does not need to have been completed within a specific time period, although artists are encouraged to make and submit work specifically for this event. Artists may submit up to 3 images for jurying. A statement may be included with the work but is not required.
Over 75 works of art will be selected for exhibition. Five Awards of Merit of $500 each will be awarded by the judges in any category, with one prize reserved exclusively for work made in 2017. Work may be for sale (20% commission) or on loan (NFS). Artists are responsible for delivery of accepted art to the Thomas Center Galleries between September 11 and September 13, 2017. Entry fee is $15.00 for one image; additional images are $10.00 each (limit 2 additional images). Art will be judged by a four-person jury: Erin Curry, Amy Freeman, Larry Wilson, and Carol McCusker. Final selections will be made by curator Anne E. Gilroy.
