About This Call

The Town Park Sculpture Garden is a collaborative effort by the Crested Butte Creative District, Town of Crested Butte, Crested Butte Center for the Arts, and Colorado Creative Industries. The project aims to enhance the sense of place in the Creative District by creating new public art that showcases creative work, encourages walkability, inspires community engagement with the arts, and anchors the new Center for the Arts building in Town Park. This project is a component of Crested Butte's Arts in Public Places Policy.

The Creative District is requesting proposals for outdoor three-dimensional art or sculptures for installation in Town Park. There is potential for one permanent sculpture and two temporary sculptures or installations. Three sculptures may be featured on in-ground concrete pedestals adjacent to the Center for the Arts building along the walking path. Proposals for temporary public art that could be anchored in the ground without a pedestal are also welcome. Proposals may include interactive or multimedia work beyond a single sculpture. All selected temporary proposals will be installed from July 1, 2019 to October 15, 2019. The permanent sculpture must be installed prior to August 15, 2019.

Art pieces must be installed on one of three concrete pedestals along the North walking path or in the general area without impeding utilities, irrigation, or landscape installations. Sculptures should match the size and scale of the space and inspire a sense of place. All installations must be safe for public interaction, able to withstand weather elements and landscaping (sprinklers), and require minimal maintenance. The selected artist must be present for installation and deinstallation. If lighting is included, it must adhere to the Town's lighting ordinance and use only solar or battery power. The permanent sculpture budget does not exceed $10,000, including installation and maintenance, with a minimum 20% maintenance budget. Selected temporary artists receive a $1,500 honorarium and may list sculptures as for-sale; if sold within three months of display, the Creative District retains a 25% commission.

Proposals must include a completed cover sheet, design sketch or high-resolution photos with description, materials list and budget, expected dimensions and pedestal requirements, written installation/deinstallation and maintenance plan, explanation of public safety, applicant qualifications and resume, descriptions and photos of past three-dimensional work, and project workflow if not yet fabricated. Proposals will be evaluated on project feasibility, safety, and aesthetic merit.
