About This Call

The Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA), a non-profit Business Improvement District, is seeking an artist or artist team to design artwork graphics for pedestrian crosswalks at 6 mid-block crossings along Pine Avenue in Downtown Long Beach. The selected artist shall create a series of design variations that reflect the unique identity, diversity, culture, and/or history of Downtown Long Beach. Installation and maintenance of the approved artwork graphics will be the responsibility of the DLBA.

Pine Avenue is currently in the final stages of a yearlong construction project that will see new trees and landscaping, lighting, street furniture, and street resurfacing. The Creative Crosswalk artwork will enhance the Pine Avenue project improvements by incorporating artist-designed graphics within the standard crosswalk markings. Each mid-block crosswalk is approximately 20 feet wide and 32 feet long.

The selected artist or artist team will receive a design fee of $3,500. The fabrication of stencils and installation of the art to the crosswalk will be contracted by the DLBA in coordination with the City of Long Beach and is separate from the artist design fee. The DLBA will retain the exclusive right to use the approved graphic design files in perpetuity for any similar DLBA application without further compensation. Eligibility is limited to artists who reside in Los Angeles County. Artists will be selected through a juried process by design professionals, Downtown stakeholders, and DLBA and City staff. Submissions must include a cover letter, CV/resume (2-page maximum), and a minimum of 10 to a maximum of 20 digital images of completed projects with project summaries. The deadline for submissions is November 28, 2015 at 11:59 PM Mountain Time.
