Creative Bike Racks

The Jackson Hole Center for the Arts is seeking designs for custom bike racks to be installed on its campus, located between Cache and Glenwood streets just south of the town square. The 78,000 square-foot building and adjacent Center Park serve as a central hub for cultural, artistic, creative, and educational activity in Jackson Hole, hosting approximately 100,000 visitors annually.

The goal of the artwork is to create inviting, highly-functional bike racks that tie to the theme of the Center for the Arts. Designs should take inspiration from the creative campus and can include specific art forms such as dance, theatre, music, visual arts, and/or a more general expression of art, creativity, and design. Artists or teams of artists may submit designs for one or more custom bike racks that complement the architecture and express the mission.

Each rack must accommodate two bicycles, support the bicycle upright on a horizontal plane by its frame in two places, prevent the wheel from tipping over, enable the front or both wheels to be secured, support bicycles without a diamond-shaped frame or horizontal top tube, and allow front-in parking with a U-lock. It is preferred that racks are accessible and usable from both sides and intuitive to use while accommodating a variety of bike types. Designs must adhere to the Town of Jackson Bike Parking Standard Detail.

The final design(s) selected will receive a $1,000 award and permanent name recognition on the final bike rack(s). The artist is responsible for submitting the design proposal but is not responsible for fabrication. Submissions are open to all artists, designers, and bicycle enthusiasts. Deadline: April 28, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Selection panel announces finalist(s) May 5, with installation scheduled for June.
