About This Call
CraftTexas 2008 is a juried exhibition hosted by Houston Center for Contemporary Craft showcasing the best in Texas-made contemporary craft. This is the fifth in a series of exhibitions featuring artists from across Texas working in clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and found/recycled materials. The exhibition will be captured in a DVD catalogue and may be toured, providing Texas artists the opportunity to be considered for inclusion in major national museum and private collections.
The exhibition is open to all artists currently residing in Texas. Each artist may submit up to three original works completed within the last two years. Works in craft media (clay, fiber, glass, metal, wood, and found/recycled materials) will be accepted. Submitted work must be available for a one-year traveling schedule and may not be withdrawn from the exhibition prior to the final closing date. Crated work must fit through a 4' x 8' door and may not exceed 200 pounds in weight. The entry fee is $35 (non-refundable). Artists must submit a digital image per work (up to three total), an artist statement (maximum 1000 characters), and a one-page resume in MS Word or PDF format. Artists must indicate if work is for sale and list retail prices if applicable; HCCC retains a 50% commission on all retail sales.
Work will be juried via digital images by Kate Bonansinga (Director of the Stanlee and Gerald Rubin Center for the Visual Arts and Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Texas at El Paso), Harlan Butt (metalsmith and Regents Professor of Art at the University of North Texas), and Jane Sauer (fiber artist, sculptor and owner of Jane Sauer Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico). Three Award of Merit prizes of $1,000 each will be chosen. All selected artists will receive the CraftTexas 2008 DVD catalogue. Notification of acceptance will be on or before April 14, 2008. The exhibition runs May 24 – August 17, 2008, at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Accepted work should arrive exhibition ready between Friday, May 9, and Friday, May 16, 2008. Artists are responsible for transit and insurance of accepted work to the venue. HCCC will provide insurance on all works while exhibited on site, during transit to the first touring venue, and upon return to the artist.
