About This Call
The City of Covington and the Covington Arts Commission announce a Call for Artists to submit proposals for a signature piece of public art to be permanently installed in the main entrance of Covington Community Park, located at 17649 SE 240th St., Covington, WA 98042. The Commission seeks well-qualified professional and emerging 3D artists residing in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho to develop a unique piece that welcomes visitors and draws people from the region. Artist teams are welcome to apply.
The project budget is $25,000. Artwork may be in any media and must be durable, suitable for outdoors, and able to withstand the elements and interaction with the public. Works may be functional or non-functional, and existing sculptures or artwork proposals are accepted. The art envelope requirement is 8 feet wide by 5 feet deep by 18 feet tall, with a maximum weight of 5,000 lbs. The installation foundation includes an existing 8 feet long by 5 feet wide by 18-inch-thick reinforced concrete slab. The artist will be responsible for proposing mounting interface details for artwork anchorage, with final approval by the City. The artist must be present and provide guidance during installation in November 2019.
Selection will be based on artist merit, strength of design, unique creation capable of becoming a regional treasure, contribution to the park's aesthetic, interpretation of the City Art theme "water, air, earth," reflection of community spirit, completeness of application, and ability to produce work within the agreed timeframe. All proposed artwork must be appropriate for viewing by all age groups in a public space. Freestanding murals will not be considered. Top three proposals will be invited to present in person to the Selection Committee, with presentations up to thirty minutes including Q&A. Presenting artists will receive a $350 stipend. Applications must include artist statement, resume (two-page limit), and a minimum of 3 digital images per artwork with a maximum of 20 total images per submission. Application deadline: April 22, 2019 at 5:00 PM PST.
