About This Call
The City of Covington invites sculptors to submit proposals for a public art exhibition at Covington Aquatic Center Plaza. The selected work will be on loan to the City for twelve months (October 2014 – October 2015) and can be available for sale during that time. The selected artist will receive a $1,500 stipend. At the conclusion of the exhibition, the City of Covington may purchase the piece for inclusion in the city's permanent art collection.
The venue is an outdoor plaza area in front of the city aquatic center, a destination for area families and over 100,000 people per year. Depending on the height of the piece, it may also be visible from the roadway, which fronts Tahoma High School, Covington Community Park, and the Tahoma National Cemetery.
Artwork may be in any media and must be durable, suitable for outdoors, and able to withstand the elements as well as interaction with pedestrians and the general public. Works may be functional or non-functional. Existing sculptures as well as artwork proposals are accepted. Proposals can be submitted as a sketch/illustration along with examples of other work that demonstrates artistry, proficiency, and finish quality. Artwork must not weigh more than 5,000 lbs and must fit within a 6' x 6' x 10' envelope. Maximum sail area must not exceed 50 sq ft. Artwork must be attached to an anchorage plate as defined by the City.
The artist is responsible for transportation, installation, and removal of the artwork. The artwork will not be insured by the City during display, installation, or removal. The City will provide signage to identify the artwork and promote the sculpture on the City's website, in printed materials, and at an opening reception. The artist is responsible for maintenance and repairs during the exhibition. Open to professional artists or artist teams living or working in the Pacific Northwest. Applicants may submit up to three sculptures for consideration. A minimum of 3 digital images per artwork is required; a maximum of 20 digital images is allowed per total submission.
