About This Call

The County of Yolo is seeking permanent work(s) of public art to be installed in the new Juvenile Multi-Purpose Facility, an annex to the Juvenile Detention Facility located at 2880 East Gibson Road in Woodland. The facility will include indoor recreation, a large multi-purpose room, and family contact visiting spaces designed to provide structured rehabilitative programs and re-entry services for youth. Key areas for art integration include the exterior landscape, lobby/reception, and family visiting rooms.

Artists are encouraged to create designs that inspire and ignite curiosity in youth, families, and staff. The artwork should draw inspiration from supporting youth and families, provide motivation to build a stronger community, inspire positive change and transition, instill social values of respect, evoke a sense of reclaiming the future, consider the site's design and architecture, meet the scale of surrounding buildings, and reflect the cultural diversity of Yolo County communities. A budget of $43,000 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, and maintenance.

Submissions will be reviewed by an Art Selection Panel, which will select up to three finalists to submit conceptual design proposals. Finalists will each receive $1,000 to develop their design. Selection criteria include originality, workmanship, professionalism, and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with public agencies and community organizations. Applicants must submit contact information, a resume (maximum three pages), a one-page letter of interest describing their design concept, four images of past work (teams may submit up to six images), and an image list. Artwork placed in areas accessible by facility residents must be securely mounted and cannot utilize breakable materials, sharp edges, or materials that could be removed or altered for use as a weapon. Safety glass or polycarbonate must be used for all glazing in lobby, entry, or exterior areas.
