About This Call

The Women's Art Initiative (WAI) of Rock Hill is seeking proposals from artists and designers to create a contemporary outdoor park area with design features or artwork(s) intended to instill calm and tranquility. The pocket park site is located on White Street in the historic Old Town District of Rock Hill, adjacent to The Episcopal Church of Our Saviour's 12-Step Center and Joe's Video Games. The site spans approximately 54' x 27' with a wall varying from 16' 9" to 19' at its highest point and 75' wide.

The project aims to offer residents a spot of respite within the city while celebrating nature, specifically the flora and biodiversity of Rock Hill and the region. Design inclusions for consideration include sculpture or sculptural elements, design enhancements such as a mural for the brick wall, and decorative elements that may function as pathways or walkways. The finished work must be pet, child, and family friendly, ideally with an inspirational or uplifting component such as a quote or encouraging imagery, and should include an aspect allowing for photo opportunities with community members. The installation may reach up to 12' tall with no overhanging parts permitted.

The WAI budget for design, construction, and completion is $30,000, with potential for an additional $5,000 in reserve. This budget covers all associated costs including artist and apprentice fees, materials, labor, insurance, shipping, travel, and convening expenses. Artists and designers may apply as individuals or teams. Applicants must submit a design proposal with written statement, preliminary budget, and timeline; 5-10 digital images of site-specific design ideas and renderings; 5-10 digital images of professional work; resume(s); and three professional references. Professional artists and designers with demonstrated success in outdoor public works are encouraged to apply. This opportunity is open to individuals 18 years or older residing in any of the United States, with southeastern United States residents highly encouraged. Board and committee members of WAI or the selection panel are not eligible.
