About This Call
Contested Spaces: 2019 Harnett Biennial of American Prints is the twelfth competitive national exhibition organized by the University of Richmond Museums. Submissions are encouraged by artists addressing the topic of "contested spaces" from both content and aesthetic perspectives. The exhibition is open to all artists residing in the United States and celebrates contemporary printmaking. Entries must be in the category of printmaking using any traditional and/or experimental techniques and media, including intaglio, relief, planographic, stencil, monotype, and digital processes. Photographs on paper are eligible. Giclée reproductions are not allowed. Prints must have been completed in the last two years. The entry fee is $35 (non-refundable). Submissions must include 1-3 images.
The Harnett Biennial will be on view from October 22 to December 6, 2019, in the Joel and Lila Harnett Museum of Art. The juror is Carmen Hermo, Associate Curator at the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum. Accepted artists will be notified by email on September 5, 2019. Works must be received by October 8, 2019. A juror talk and opening reception will be held on October 22 at 6 p.m. and 7-8 p.m., respectively.
Artists are responsible for delivery and return shipping of their work. Prints must be framed under plexiglass (no glass allowed) and securely mounted with all necessary hardware for hanging. Sales will be encouraged with a 20% commission collected on sold work. Several purchase awards will be offered, and purchased prints will become part of the Joel and Lila Harnett Print Study Center collection.
