About This Call
Complementary Colors is an online juried exhibition open to all artists in the United States working in 2D media. The theme focuses on complementary colors—colors directly opposite on the color wheel such as blue & orange, yellow & purple, and red & green. Pieces should use complementary colors as the main color scheme or focal point. Literal interpretations are preferred, but pieces featuring colors that complement one another are also acceptable.
Acceptable mediums include watercolor, gouache, acrylic, oils, ink, casein, egg tempera, and any other 2D media except photography, 3D media, reproductions, and digital art. Work must not have been exhibited in a previous Rhode Island Watercolor Society juried show, must have been completed within the last 10 years, and must be original work not copied from copyrighted material or created under the direct guidance of another or following a tutorial. Work may have been done in a class or workshop using only the artist's own reference material. Submitted digital images must accurately represent the actual work with no alterations.
The exhibition runs September 9–October 13, with an online opening reception on Friday, September 15 at 6pm via Zoom. Notification of acceptance is September 8. Entry fee is $15 per image for non-members and $10 per image for members. Submit 1-3 images. Over $400 in cash prizes will be awarded. Juror: Ida Schmulowitz. Work may be listed as not for sale by entering 0 in the price section or contacting [email protected]. If work is sold through the online gallery, the Rhode Island Watercolor Society receives 35% of the sale.
