About This Call
The Town of Windsor Arts Commission is seeking an artist to design, fabricate, and install a vehicular scale three-dimensional entryway sign and a complementary pedestrian scale housing for a digital screen at the Windsor Community Recreation Center (CRC). The entryway sign will be the first thing visitors see as they approach the CRC, and the digital sign will be installed outside the building's main entrance to communicate important information. This project represents a growing collaboration between the WAC and other departments within the Town of Windsor to beautify infrastructure and wayfinding and increase the Town's public art holdings.
The CRC is an 85,000 square-foot facility with two gymnasiums, multiple fitness rooms, an indoor aquatic facility, and various other amenities. It has nearly 6,500 members and sees over 200,000 visitors annually. The site is located just east of Downtown Windsor and across the street from Windsor High School. Based on the Town of Windsor Public Art Master Plan, the WAC seeks an artist who will create a piece that is engaging, interactive, inviting, reflects the values of the Parks, Recreation & Culture Department in a creative way, and is appropriate in scale to the site. Residents in the neighborhood expressed higher interest in environmental and infrastructure art. There is no required minimum or maximum size for the artwork, however, artists will be required to have engineered drawings and obtain all necessary permits prior to installation. The digital screen is 4'2" by 7'6".
Initial applications should include an artist statement or letter of intent addressing interest in the project and any ties to the Town of Windsor or Northern Colorado, a current resume or CV and/or portfolio links, at least three but no more than ten images of relevant works, and a narrative statement outlining the proposed project for the site. Three to five finalists will be selected to submit a full proposal including scale models, drawings, renderings, itemized budget, maintenance plan, and timeline. Finalists will receive a $200 stipend to prepare proposals. Any artist living and working in Colorado is welcome to apply, with preference given to Northern Colorado artists and those with prior experience creating public art and working with municipalities. Artists must demonstrate the ability to complete the project in the required time frame and have knowledge of their materials and maintenance requirements. Contact Laura Browarny, Culture Supervisor, at [email protected] with questions or to request feedback on narratives by July 30th.
