About This Call
The City of Grand Junction and the Grand Junction Commission on Arts and Culture are seeking an artist to create an original painted mural for the Community Room at the new Community Recreation Center located at Matchett Park, 2836 Recreation Way.
The mural design should be more abstract and neutral on the wall inside the Community Room as it will be in a multi-use event space for wedding receptions, birthday parties, reunions, and celebrations. As it wraps around the hallway and opposite wall, it can expand to something more vibrant and colorful. The design should utilize the color palette specified in the site details, complement the wall color SW 9179 Anchors Aweigh in the Community Room, and complement the hallway colors SW 7009 Pearly White, SW 7538 Tamarind, and SW 7705 Wheat Penny. The mural should cover the doors in the Community Room and wrap around the hallway and entrance walls. Materials must be long-lasting and resistant to vandalism or scratches, with a cleanable and protective coating to extend longevity.
The project is open to all artists residing in Colorado, age 21 and over. Artists must be able to show images of original creations similar in size and theme to this project. Selection will be based on past artwork experience, style, concept, ability to comply with the timeline, and references. The budget for this project cannot exceed $19,000. If selected, the artist is responsible for all costs involved in the design and creation/painting of the mural, including paint, painting supplies, scaffolding, ladders, tools, protective coverings, and any equipment required to safely and effectively complete the mural. The submission deadline is February 22, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Artists will be notified on March 27, 2026. Painting is scheduled for July 2026 with an August 1 hard deadline. Applications must include a letter of interest (not to exceed one page), resume (not to exceed two pages), one-page design description, proposed concept sketch(es), and not more than five images of original representative work in .JPG or .JPEG format (maximum 1024 x 768 pixels, no larger than 1mb each).
