About This Call

The City of Pompano Beach Public Art Program, funded by the Community Foundation of Broward Grant- Art of Community, is seeking a professional artist or artist team for the Asphalt Art: The Crossroads Connection project. The selected artist(s) should have experience with community engagement public art projects. The project budget is $34,000 with a project end date of July 1, 2021.

The artist(s) will conduct community engagement and outreach activities to interact with the public and communicate the development of final artworks. Community engagement activities can be in person, online, or a combination of both, and should emphasize inclusion and diversity. The project will engage residents of all ages and artistic levels. The artist(s) shall document the development through photography, painting, sculpture, installation, writing, video, or other artistic forms.

The final deliverables include: a minimum of five community engagement activities, two volunteer training sessions, four designs for large-scale asphalt street art murals, and eight designs for storm drain murals. The artist is responsible for designing the four large-scale asphalt murals (installation by hired contractor) and for designing, training volunteers, supervising, and assisting with installation of the eight storm drain murals. Storm drain designs should be environmentally conscious and ocean-friendly, addressing misconceptions about storm drain disposal. Asphalt mural themes should express community thoughts, opinions, and diversity related to "crossing over barriers." No logos, words, political or religious references, or nudity are permitted in designs. The artist must obtain necessary permits and ensure ADA and code compliance. Artist services also include developing an action plan, collaborating with the Public Art Committee and city administrator, and supervising volunteer installation of storm drain murals.
