About This Call

The Golden Triangle Creative District (GTCD) invites Colorado-based artists and artist teams to apply for COLORCON 2023, a live mural painting event. COLORCON is a musical and artistic mural event that moves throughout the GTCD community, pushing boundaries and re-imagining spaces and alleyways as iconic destinations while making art accessible to all. The festival seeks to highlight and celebrate public spaces in unconventional ways, inspire creative entrepreneurship, and beautify GTCD parking lots and alleyways in downtown Denver.

The 2023 theme is "Celebrating Local Icons Past & Present" (CLIPP). The Selection Committee is calling for artists interested in celebrating and highlighting Denver's iconic people of color—individuals from or who lived in Denver, or who made a significant impact on the city in the past or present. Artists should create diverse and cohesive representational or figurative images of significant people of color, or groupings thereof, suitable for outdoor mural installation. Examples include civil rights activists, musicians, athletes, film industry figures, and artists. The Selection Committee is open to other suggestions of significant people of color from artists and muralists selected as finalists.

Up to five artists or artist teams will be selected as semi-finalists and will receive a $1,500.00 stipend to develop a concept proposal. Semi-finalists will receive site-specific information, meet with the Selection Committee during a site visit, develop a concept design, and install a mural at the designated site(s). Mural installations are scheduled for August 21-26, 2023, with the COLORCON 2023 Mural & Music Festival on August 26th. Materials and equipment will be provided to commissioned artists. All public art projects must be fabricated of highly durable, low-maintenance materials suitable for outdoor exposure. Applicants must submit 4-8 digital images of previously completed artworks or murals, a statement of interest (maximum 2000 characters), and a one-to-two-page résumé or CV highlighting professional accomplishments and prior public art experience. Local artists are preferred, particularly those who have not obtained a prior COLORCON commission.
