About This Call

The Colorado Council on the Arts, Art in Public Places Program and the Colorado State Patrol seek to commission site-specific public artwork for the Colorado State Patrol Troop Office and Regional Communications Center in Alamosa, Colorado. The artwork will be located on the grounds outside the entrance to the facility.

The artwork must be three-dimensional and should create a welcome to this multi-functional regional facility located in southwestern Colorado. The artwork can be kinetic or suggest motion, should create a presence, be somewhat vertical in nature to be visible to passersby on the adjacent road, and speak to the high mountain valley character of southern Colorado. The artwork will make a significant impact because there is no landscaping except decorative gravel. The front of the facility is 18' high and 116' long with a glass wall 14' high facing north.

A total art budget of $14,500 is available for all related expenses including artist fees, fabrication, insurance, shipping, travel, installation, documentation, and other costs. This opportunity is open to Colorado artists only who work on projects similar in size and scope to this commission. Artists with a current project with the State are not eligible. Applicants must submit 6 digital images of previously completed work, a resume, and an artist statement of no more than 2,000 characters through the CaFÉ online application system. There is no application fee. Semi-finalists will be notified November 1, 2009, and will receive a small honorarium to develop the concept for artwork approval by the committee. Semi-finalist interviews are scheduled for January 2010, with installation of artwork planned for late spring 2010.
