About This Call

The Colorado Mental Health Hospital in Fort Logan (CMHHIFL) is seeking commissioned public artwork for the G Wing building renovation. This project will add 16 beds to house forensic patients in a home-like environment during competency restoration. The facility includes semiprivate and private rooms, a comfort room, day room, dining area, group room, and quiet activity room. A residential courtyard features natural grass and hardscape with a mesh security fence allowing breeze and light. Adjacent to this is a decorative courtyard with additional landscaping intended to provide visual privacy and connection to nature.

The Art Selection Committee is commissioning artwork or artworks for the decorative courtyard of the G Wing building. The goal is to create a visually interactive yet peaceful environment that is soothing and therapeutic in nature, creating a nurturing space where patients feel grounded. While the courtyard is not accessible to patients, artists should consider durability and safety of proposed materials. Water features or artworks with water components will not be considered. The selection committee will evaluate artistic excellence, scale, material, form and content, safety of materials, appropriate relationship to site function, resistance to wear and vandalism, and ease of maintenance.

Budget: Up to $78,000. All costs associated with commissioned public artworks, including artist fee, insurance, materials, fabrication, transportation, installation, building or site modifications, travel, per diem, project documentation, and contingency expenses are covered by the budget. Semifinalists will be invited to prepare and present final proposals in person and will receive an honorarium between $1,000-$1,500. Applicants must submit 6-8 digital images of previously completed artworks, a current résumé, and a statement of interest of 250 words or less via the CaFÉ system. There is no application fee. Eligibility is open to United States residents of all identities, backgrounds, and abilities.
