About This Call

Community College of Denver is seeking qualifications from artists and artist teams interested in creating a work of art for the new Student Learning and Engagement Building on the campus of the Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) in Denver. The total art budget is $150,000.

The 87,000 square foot building will house student services functions, classrooms, testing, tutoring center and a café. Potential artwork locations include exterior locations such as a two-story brick wall east of the main entry and a free-standing seat wall along the west edge of the South Plaza, as well as interior locations including a four-story wall on the west side of the main stair, suspended installations within the third floor volume above the welcome hall, and suspended installations in the one-stop waiting area. The building design is intended to establish a new image for CCD and its neighborhood and will be the most sustainable building on campus, expected to achieve LEED Gold certification.

Applicants must submit: 6 digital images of previously completed work identified with name, location, budget, and year; a two-page current resume outlining accomplishments; and a Statement of Interest with no more than 2,000 characters describing interest in the project and experience working on similar projects. Artists submitting kinetic or other media must also submit a DVD of no more than 10 minutes. The Art Selection Committee will review all complete submittals and select a short list of semifinalists to interview and submit an in-depth proposal for an honorarium. Final selection will be made from the semifinalists. A contract will be prepared between CCD and the selected artist, with coordination meetings held between the artist, architects, engineers and CCD constituents. The artist will be responsible for producing the art, coordinating with the art committee on display methods, transporting the art, and coordinating construction necessary for display. Artwork restrictions: the art should not make a political statement, should be easy to maintain, and must be within the established budget. Semi-finalists will be notified by March 12, 2012, with presentations to the committee in late April 2012. Installation is anticipated for spring 2013.
