About This Call

The Colorado Art + Science + Environment (CASE) Collaboration Fellowships accept applications from Colorado-based artists for art and science collaborations. Selected fellows will work with CU Boulder scientists and community partners to explore social and environmental issues related to drought, fire, and air quality in Colorado communities. Four artist-scientist teams will produce eight 2D artworks to be exhibited at the Colorado State Capitol in late Spring 2023. Visual artists, performance artists, dancers, and social practice artists are encouraged to apply. BIPOC artists, artists committed to equitably addressing Colorado environmental issues, and artists based in rural Colorado are highly encouraged to apply.

Selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend with a project completion deadline of April 30, 2023, up to $1,000 for materials, and funding for printing two pieces. Starting in October 2022, artist and scientist teams will work together to create new work inspired by research on Colorado-specific climate issues. Each team will have a community partner for site-specific perspective and local engagement. Scientists from the Institute for Alpine and Arctic Research and other CU units will be paired with artists. Monthly virtual meetings will be held from October 2022 through January 2023 to facilitate dialogue, relationship development, and connections with community partners. Teams must meet independently at least once in February 2023, share work in late March, and complete projects by April 30, 2023. Selected artists must meet with their scientist collaborator at least twice, gain entry-level understanding of the research, meet with community partners at least twice, and include them in the art-making process.

Application requirements include an artist statement, up to 3 artworks, and responses to additional questions. All applicants must reside in Colorado and have the skills to collaborate with others. Artists must commit to the required meetings and interactions and to producing 2D work for the state capitol exhibition. Application fee is $15. Contact [email protected] for application fee support or questions.
