About This Call
Create a tabletop piece (used for dinnerware, serve-ware, or tabletop accessories) that addresses the design concepts in the work of Naoto Fukasawa. Designs must consider minimalist form and materials, user experience (functional and easy to use), sense of delight and enjoyment in use, and elements of humanism.
Submissions must include a graphic presentation (11" x 17" full color high resolution), 3-D images of the design in context and scale, and a 300-word design statement. Total submission: 3-5 high resolution images at 300dpi. Judging criteria include evidence of applied research and process, originality and creativity of the concept, and ability to be manufactured. Judges include Paolo Cravedi (VP Wholesale at Heller Furniture), Josh Longo (Senior Director of Design – Hardgoods at Crate & Barrel), Bonnie Mackay (Design Consultant), Yuka Moriha (CEO of Morihata International), and Donald Strum (President of Michael Graves Design).
Eligibility is open to students currently enrolled in a college or university. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, at 3:30–5:00pm EST via Zoom. Prizes: First Prize $800, Second Prize $500, Third Prize $300, and two Honorable Mentions at $200 each. Winning projects will be published on the Philadelphia Museum of Art website, Collab online journal, and displayed through Collab/Philadelphia Museum of Art social media platforms.
