About This Call

Coeur d'Alene Public Library seeks a dynamic artist to visually enhance the McEuen Park side exterior of the building above the Seagrave Children's Library. The library is requesting proposals from artists that meet its goals while allowing for independent expression within the concept. Submissions should reflect the stated design concept, be tailored towards children's interests, fit with the building's design aesthetic, and be reflective of the library's role within the community.

The artwork's purpose is to advertise the location of the Children's Library to those recreating in McEuen Park. It should be reflective of a diverse community and have broad appeal. As it will be mounted externally, it must be made of durable, weather-proof materials requiring low maintenance. The artist must consult with appropriate City of Coeur d'Alene departments during design and installation, and follow all code and safety requirements. Pre-existing artwork that fits the project goals and is suitable for mounting may be considered, provided it does not replicate artwork existing within a 100-mile radius of Coeur d'Alene.

The artwork will be mounted to the building at 702 E. Front Ave, Coeur d'Alene, ID 83814, on the side facing McEuen Park. Maximum average projection from the wall face is 2 feet. Attachment must be made by anchoring to the existing brick masonry veneer façade with proposed attachment details and engineering calculations stamped by a structural engineer licensed in Idaho. Maximum weight shall not exceed an average of 20 pounds per lineal foot or 800 pounds total. Artificial lighting via backlighting or front lighting is acceptable and must comply with City code for light pollution and glare control. The library will provide an electric circuit and junction box. The artist is responsible for installation in consultation with City departments.

Project budget is up to $18,000, inclusive of all costs including management fees, subcontract and consultant costs, fabrication, lighting, transportation, delivery, installation, liability and insurance, and all other project-related costs. Selected finalists will receive a $1,000 honorarium to prepare final drawings and a 3-D maquette, separate from the project budget. Submissions must include a cover letter outlining a concept meeting project goals, a resume reflecting experience with similar-scale art installation, and at least three images of previous work. Up to five color images may be submitted with annotated information. Eligibility is open to all artists, designers, or creative individuals residing in North America. Coeur d'Alene Arts Commission members and selection committee members are not eligible. Selection criteria include artistic quality, context, diversity, structural integrity, feasibility, and evidence of ability to successfully complete the work.
