About This Call

The Coeur d'Alene Arts Commission is seeking an interactive sculpture for installation at the South/Center Trail Confluence of McEuen Park. The renewed and revitalized McEuen Park is being developed into a destination park with compelling and memorable features designed to serve the greatest number of uses for all ages and abilities throughout all seasons. The interactive sculpture should embody the vibrant present and bright future of this area, significantly beautifying the southern side of the park. The piece should be visually enjoyed by visitors and feature interactive components—from simple touch to elements children or adventurous visitors could climb on, or something visually or audibly interactive. Located at a major trail confluence, the sculpture will receive significant foot and bicycle traffic.

The total funding available is up to $85,000.00, which must include all engineering, lighting, and installation costs. Artists may submit up to five designs. The art must be comprised of low-maintenance, weather-resistant materials that can withstand prolonged public interaction. There is no theme requirement, allowing for open interpretation and creativity. Electricity will be available for installation and lighting. The artwork may be a new original piece or an existing work by the artist, but may not be on display in other public art programs within a 200-mile radius of Coeur d'Alene. Artwork may not contain advertising, religious content, sexual content, negative imagery, or convey political partisanship.

Eligibility is open to all artists, designers, or creative individuals residing in North America. Initial submissions should include a resume reflecting experience with public art installation at similar scale, one image of the proposal/concept, and five images of previous work. Short-listed artists will receive a $300 stipend and will prepare final drawings and maquettes. Submissions will be evaluated by a seven-member selection committee based on artistic quality, context, diversity, structural integrity, feasibility, and evidence of the artist's ability to successfully complete the work. The public will be involved in the selection process by voting on their favorite submissions. Timeline: Call issued April 26, 2013; concepts due June 21, 2013; short-listed artists notified by July 8, 2013; final drawings and maquettes due August 9, 2013; public review August 10-24, 2013; successful artist chosen by August 28, 2013; contract issued September 20, 2013; delivery and installation by June 2014.
