About This Call
The Coeur d'Alene "ArtCurrents" program is a public art initiative seeking sculptures on loan with the intention to sell from artists residing in the Northwest US and British Columbia. Public art creates and enhances neighborhood and community identity, adds to the visual landscape and character of the city, and is accessible to everyone. ArtCurrents provides high visibility outdoor gallery space for selected pieces throughout high traffic streets, parks, and public spaces in downtown Coeur d'Alene, Riverstone, and Atlas Waterfront Park areas.
Artists are encouraged to submit pieces that center on themes or interpretations of the Northwest in any form. Artwork must be a minimum of 36" tall or larger, a three-dimensional stand-alone piece, and must be designed and fabricated for long-term outdoor durability and ease of maintenance, including potential vandalism. Artwork should be valued at a minimum of $5,000 and a maximum of $25,000. The first-year placement period runs from October 2024 through September 2025, with an option to renew for an additional year (October 2025 through September 2026). Selected artists will receive a $1,000 stipend for the first year and an additional $1,000 stipend at the start of the second year if the piece is retained. The City of Coeur d'Alene receives a 25% commission from any sales. Artists are responsible for transporting artwork to and from its location.
Submissions must include two or more digital images taken from front and back viewpoints, installation requirements, and a written statement explaining the piece's inspiration and how it fits into the Coeur d'Alene community. A selection committee of local arts professionals, citizens, a councilmember, and other members will evaluate submissions based on artistic quality, context, site compatibility, materials suitability, safety, public appeal, and other factors. Selected pieces will be submitted to the Arts Commission and City Council for approval. The project is open to all artists residing in Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, British Columbia, Washington, and Oregon. Artist teams are eligible to apply.
