About This Call
Central Oregon Community College (COCC) seeks to commission a permanent large-scale work of art for the Campus Center building on the COCC campus in Bend, Oregon. The work will be located on or in front of an exterior wall of the building (and may include the courtyard) at the main entrance on College Way.
The Campus Center building is 31,000 square feet with a scheduled opening in spring 2009. The entrance and site for the art faces east and will be highly visible to pedestrian and automobile traffic. The useable wall space on the exterior wall is 6 ft. H x 30 ft. W x 2 ft. D (work must start at 5 ft. above ground level with roof overhang beginning at 11 ft.). Brackets embedded in the exterior wall can support approximately 2,400 pounds. The courtyard dimensions available are 9 ft. H x 17 ft. W x 10 ft. D. The exterior wall is protected by an 8 ft. overhang with planned lighting. The work of art must be fabricated in durable, permanent, outdoor media that is safe, easily maintained, and has proven viability in public artworks.
This is an open competition for professional artists residing in the Northwest United States (Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and California). Teams of artists are welcome to apply. The budget for the commission shall not exceed $25,000. The completed and installed artwork becomes the property of COCC with shared copyright; COCC may use images for public relations, advertising, and educational purposes but not for commercial purposes without artist authorization. Artists must submit a current resume, 4 artwork images with descriptions (title, date, dimensions, materials, location), and a statement of interest expressing initial ideas for the project. The selection panel will evaluate submissions based on artistic merit, past experience, and ability to work in large scale. Application deadline: December 1, 2008 at 11:59 p.m. MST. Notification of finalists: mid-December 2008. Finalist presentations: February 1-12, 2009. Selection: March 2009. Installation: August 2009. Grand opening and art unveiling: mid-to-late September 2009.
