About This Call
Colorado Area Health Education Centers (COAHEC) and Mesa County Libraries – Clifton Branch are seeking qualified public artists to create an outdoor wall mural at the Mesa County Libraries – Clifton Branch, located at 3270 D ½ Road, Clifton, Colorado, 81520.
The mural project is part of COAHEC's MURALS program, which funds health-themed murals created by local artists to communicate health messages in culturally resonant ways to Colorado communities. The Clifton Library champions the health of patrons through community connections and access to programs and activities. Community stakeholder research identified that Clifton residents value safe spaces, connections to neighbors, and the natural environment's contribution to recreation and wellbeing. Artists are encouraged to address these community values through creative concepts, with sub-themes including aspirations for stronger community connections, appreciation for the natural environment and outdoor recreation, and how connection to nature impacts overall health and wellbeing.
The selected artist will paint a mural on three exterior stucco walls leading to the main entrance, measuring 9'H x 12'W, 9'H x 43'W, and 9'H x 15'W. The budget is not to exceed $25,000, which includes design, materials, fabrication, installation, travel, documentation, insurance, and other costs. The mural must incorporate the COAHEC logo and include a protective anti-graffiti and UVLS coating. The artist will maintain copyright while COAHEC and Mesa County Libraries retain unrestricted usage rights. The artwork must be maintained for at least five years. COAHEC will produce a dedicated web page about the mural with artist information, a curatorial statement, and viewer feedback opportunities, with a QR code and title panel installed adjacent to the mural.
A Mural Review Panel will review submissions and may select up to three semifinalists. Semifinalists will be interviewed virtually before the finalist is selected. If requested, semifinalists may provide a more detailed concept sketch, and COAHEC will pay a $500 fee for this work. The selected artist will participate in meetings with the MRP to discuss vision and expectations. Payment will be made in three installments: 30% upon approval of design, 30% after half the mural is completed, and 40% upon successful installation.
Applicants must live in Colorado and reside on the Western Slope. All applicants must be age 18 or older. Submissions must include a CV/resume, a letter of intent not exceeding 300 words conveying vision and design ideas, 3-6 images of prior work, and three professional references with contact information. The application deadline is July 22, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. MDT.
