About This Call
Coachella is seeking installation proposals for the 2014 festival, taking place April 11-13 and April 18-20 on acres of unobstructed flat grass in Indio, California. The festival is looking for large-scale artistic visions including immersive environments, large-scale sculpture, fire, water/misting components, interactive installations, large-scale architectural shade structures, projection mapping and video projects, and performance art—all with killer nighttime lighting. Past installations have been as large as an acre, with sculptures reaching 125 feet tall. The festival is not seeking 2D art (paintings or photographs) or work on a human scale that could get lost in a crowd. Selected installations should be visible day and night from hundreds of feet away and are preferably not climbable.
Submissions must include: the name and detailed description of the installation, reference photos/drawings/models or video, dimensions of each piece, a detailed lighting plan, information about any fire installation (type and quantity of fuel), finish materials, and total cost (all-in, including fabrication, delivery, setup, expenses, and artist travel for both weekends). Engineering stamps may be required for some installations to ensure they withstand local wind ratings and are safe for large crowds; this requirement will be determined case-by-case. Artists or qualified crew members must be on-site at all times doors are open. The festival will supply heavy equipment, generators, fuel, safety fencing, camping with hot showers, and crew wristbands for both weekends.
Entry deadline is September 15, 2013 at 11:59 p.m. MDT. Final selections will be made by November 1, 2013. Up to 6 images may be submitted. For questions about whether your work is appropriate for the show, contact [email protected].
