About This Call
The City of Clearwater seeks a mosaic artist or artist team to design and create artwork for the grand staircase leading into Coachman Park, located at the base of the bridge to Clearwater Beach. The mosaic will be installed on the face of each stair, with additional mosaic elements for the adjacent water feature. Small designs in tile or paint are requested on the lip of each stair, which must be slip resistant. The stairs are currently light gray with steps that are not easily distinguishable.
The selected artist will receive a $120,000 award (contingent upon successful grant application) and will be responsible for artwork design, fabrication, materials, installation, insurance, travel, public presentations, meetings with City staff, identification plaque, and all related incidental expenses. Artists must have experience with public art projects of similar budget and scope. Designs must withstand Florida's climate, including daily heat exceeding 90 degrees in summer, 100% humidity, weekly thunderstorms, and occasional tropical storms and hurricanes.
Submit 4-12 images of finished works or conceptual drawings, resume, and letter of interest. A selection panel will review qualifications and select 3-5 finalists, who will each receive a $500 stipend to develop formal proposals. Final artist selection will follow proposal review. Artists will be evaluated on artistic excellence, professional experience, and compatibility with the architectural design and values of the City of Clearwater.
