About This Call

The City of Santa Clarita is seeking one artist or team of artists to design and fabricate an original, site-specific sculpture for permanent installation at David March Park. The all-inclusive budget for this project is $108,389. Artist(s) are invited to submit portfolios of past work for consideration.

David March Park is located at 28310 North Via Joyce Drive, Santa Clarita, CA 91350 on a 13.2-acre lot. The park expansion qualifies as a Capital Improvement Project (CIP) that is required to allocate 1% of eligible project cost to a civic art piece located on-site and accessible to the public. The park improvements will include shade canopies, a basketball court with sports court lighting, lighted walkways, expanded parking, a baseball field with shaded spectator stands, an additional restroom building, an ADA walkway, security lighting, shaded community gathering areas, and landscape improvements.

Artworks must be original designs suitable for viewing by all ages and site-specific to David March Park and the City of Santa Clarita. Sculptures should be no less than 6 feet and no more than 15 feet in height excluding the base, weigh no more than 3,000 pounds, and be constructed of durable materials able to withstand harsh desert weather conditions. Artworks must be installed with sufficient anchoring to prevent removal or damage from wind or earthquakes and must comply with ADA standards and standard engineering practices. Artists should consider structural soundness, resistance to theft and vandalism, and maintenance costs. The City will provide plaques indicating the artist name and artwork title, and lighting for each artwork.

Up to five semifinalists will be invited to create site-specific proposals and receive a $1,000 honorarium. Semifinalists will participate in a 30-minute virtual interview with the Artist Selection Committee. The selected finalist is responsible for all design, fabrication, transportation, installation, and associated expenses. A California-licensed engineer must provide installation drawings and instructions for City approval. The artist must provide a maintenance guide and is responsible for insurance coverage during the installation period. Installation is scheduled for Spring 2025.
